The Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, in collaboration with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, supports the E4D scholarship program. E4D stands for Engineering for Development, and this (E4D) Continuing Education Scholarship Program provides travel and living expenses scholarships to applicants from low-income countries to live in Switzerland and continue their studies at ETH Zurich. ETH4D aims to unite technological innovation with a keen understanding of people’s behavior and their skills to identify new solutions. They aim to improve the lives of poor people. ETH4D supports research, which includes the knowledge and skills of engineering, the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. This continuing education scholarship aims to educate the students and make them future leaders who work for the sustainable development of society. They train a new batch of engineers and natural scientists and make them able to develop, implement and scale innovations with a perspective to make a change globally.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must possess a recognized master’s degree.
  • They must have professional experience of at least two years.
  • Applicant should have an acceptance letter from the School for Continuing Education and DAS, MAS, CAS program office.
  • All ETH Zurich continuing education programs (MAS/CAS/DAS) are eligible for the scholarship.
  • Applicants must belong to the countries listed in the OECD DAC list other than the ones from upper-middle-income countries.
  • Furthermore, they should have a minimum English standard of TOEFL, which should be C1.
  • Proof of that language is required if the program is in a language other than English.

  • Two professional references
  • Application letter of 1-2 pages, showing the motivation of the applicant to attend the program and the impact on his career development.
  • Admission letter from the School under Continuing Education, which confirms that the applicant is admitted to the MAS, CAS, or DAS program for the respective semester.
  • English language certificate (minimum TOEFL level C1) or other internationally recognized English certificates. Proof of this acquired level must also be submitted if the program requires a minimum level in any other language.
  • Certificate of employment. The certificate must be sent to the E4D program office (e4d@sl.ethz.ch) directly through the employer (not the applicant).
